A piece of mud!

A piece of mud! A piece of mud!
One hundred yards across that flood,
‘Boys that’s our goal, our end’, they say,
‘Our flag will fly from there today’.

A piece of mud! A piece of mud!
A gentle hill, worth nothing much,
A tomb where several thousand sleep,
A place where dreadful secrets keep.

A piece of mud! A piece of mud!
Is that the cause of all the blood?
The fighting, man on man, in vain?
To take the hill, we try again.

A piece of mud! A piece of mud!
One hundred yards across that flood,
‘Boys that’s our goal, our end’, they say,
‘Our flag will fly from there today’.

  1. Good one! It speaks to the irony and seeming futility of war.

  2. Wow, a well written poem from someone who doesn’t think he’s a poet 😉 I love the repetition of “a piece of mud”… it impacts on the futility of war. A powerful piece.
PS. I love Wilfred Owen’s poem too.

  3. This is a good poem – well done!

  4. Thanks Dennis. I wasn’t happy with it, which just goes to show how little the author knows about his work!

  5. I like the contrast of the jolly tally-ho tone of this with the underlying sad universal truth of its subject matter – the supposed glory of war muddying the truth of the absolute futility of it all
